John Batey (1840 - 1874)

History
Years of Operation 1840 - 1874
Head Office 3 Gibson Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK
Areas of Operation Montrose, Scotland.
River Tyne, UK.
Brief History Around 1840, the 31 year old John Batey owned a small wooden paddle tug (details unknown) on the River Tyne. For the next twenty-four years, John Batey continued to operate small wooden tugs on the Tyne.

In 1864, Batey's son Francis became a partner with his father. Around the same time, the wooden paddle tug Rosamond was acquired in the names of both John and Francis Batey and Robert Armstrong. In 1869, Francis Batey became skipper of the tug Venus, newly built in the names of John, Francis, and Thomas Hunter Batey.

In 1874, the partnership of John and Francis Batey was formally registered as J. Batey & Son, although Robert Armstrong and others were still involved with the company.
